On a recommendation from a friend, I visited The Gourmet Burger Shop, a popular harbor-front bistro offering a variety of top quality burgers, soups, salads, seafood, and milkshakes.
I decided to try The All American, their spin on the classic Great American Cheeseburger, with mild Tillamook cheddar, grilled onions, mixed salad greens, tomato, pickles, and fry sauce, on a toasted brioche bun.
1 Aesthetics — Wow! This is the presentation you want to see: a golden bun, glistening beef patty, gooey melted cheese, two thick red tomato slices, a big slice of pickle, and an enormous pile of leafy greens, assembled masterfully into a structurally sound tower of pure “come and get me” goodness! 9
2 Flavor — Honestly, the most delicious burger I’ve tasted in ages. So juicy! The meat is seasoned to smokey, peppery perfection. And all the other flavors enhance and amplify. 9
3 Mouthfeel — Excellent! The person who built this burger knows exactly what they’re doing. From the careful application of sauce to bun, to the even distribution of vegetables, all the components of this sandwich are in perfect balance. Every bite is a delight. 9
4 Quality/Freshness — Outstanding! Highest quality meat. Freshest ripe veggies. Even the buns are baked fresh daily. Kudos! 9
5 Integrity — A beautifully assembled sandwich, solid, and sturdy. And the firmness of the bun makes a huge difference. 9
6 Atmosphere — A lovely little bungalow right across from the water, with high ceilings, minimal decor, and both indoor and outdoor seating. Clean and cute — my kinda place. 7
7 Service — Made-to-order! Fast and friendly, even when busy. 9
8 Satisfaction — Wonderful. A filling, flavorful meal and a pleasant dining experience — no notes. 9
9 Creativity/Uniqueness — Although there were other, more creative menu options from which to choose, I went with a familiar classic, and was not disappointed. This was most certainly a gourmet burger! Bonus creativity points for the savory seasoning of the beef patty, and for using fresh, local ingredients. I also applaud their attention to detail: for example, instead of a couple of pickle discs, these folks use lengthwise deli-style sandwich slices, so that you get pickle in every bite. Beautiful! 7
10 Value — Not bad. At 16.50 with choice of side (I had the potato salad with gorgonzola — so tasty), this burger basket is a bit expensive, but well worth the price. 7
Truly one of the finest burgers I’ve ever devoured. I will definitely be back, and enthusiastically give this place the highest recommendation.
