On the recommendation of two foodie friends, I checked out Oak Burger, a charmingly casual roadside drive-in specializing in fresh burgers, hand cut fries, and smoked barbecue.
I tried their classic Cheeseburger, a handmade beef patty with American cheese, pickles, lettuce, ketchup and mayo on a sesame seed bun.
1 Aesthetics — An appetizing presentation. 7
2 Flavor — Yummy. The savory beef patty was perhaps a little too salty, but juicy and full of flavor. This burger would be even more delicious with some tangy mustard, grilled onion, a thick slice of tomato, additional pickles, and an entire leaf of lettuce. 7
3 Mouthfeel — The beef and bun were on point, but I really missed the texture balance and satisfying crunch of ripe veggies. 5.5
4 Quality/Freshness — Very good! They use high-quality meat, fresh from the butcher, and you can tell. 7.5
5 Integrity — Great! A carefully constructed and sturdy sandwich. 7.5
6 Atmosphere — The ambience in this joint is a mixed bag. The location is ideal, right in the heart of Oakville, just after Highway 12 becomes Pine Street. The proprietor is friendly, his restaurant is cozy and clean, and the place smells amazing. Plus, there’s an awesome wooden Sasquatch sculpture standing guard, right across the street, visible through the window. All the vibes feel warm and welcoming until you notice the problematic wall art hanging inside the dining area. Why would any serious small business owner risk alienating half his potential customer base by displaying the face of a deeply divisive criminal politician? Not cool. 5
7 Service — Very good. The owner, who clearly takes pride in his work, chatted amiably with us before taking our orders, then disappeared into the back, soon emerging with our hot burger baskets. 7.5
8 Satisfaction — Welp, I should have gone for the Oak Burger (two patties) because I was still hungry afterward! Otherwise a fairly satisfying experience. 6.5
9 Creativity/Uniqueness — There’s nothing especially creative or unique about this burger other than the absence of a few traditional ingredients. However, the taste of fresh, high-quality meat is — pun intended — a rare pleasure. 6
10 Value — Fair. Priced at $15, this cheeseburger combo with hand cut fries and drink is a decent value. 6
I love a good burger, and these folks know what they’re doing. I’ll likely return, but next time will either dine al fresco with Bigfoot, or take my meal to go. Recommended.
