Unaffiliated with the popular Seattle chain, Dick’s Hamburgers in Spokane is a nostalgic neighborhood drive-in offering not only burgers, but corndogs, fried chicken, fish sandwiches, and more. Inspired by the tall multi-colored sign touting “Hamburgers Buy The Bag-full,” locals have encouraged one another to “Eat a Bag of Dicks” since 1965.
I tried The Whammy With Everything, a quarter pound cheeseburger with two fresh beef patties, two slices of American cheese, ketchup, mustard, pickles and chopped white onion on a toasted bun.
1 Aesthetics — Who doesn’t love gooey melted cheese on meat? Otherwise, not much to look at. 5.5
2 Flavor — Hangover food at its finest, similar to the kind of simple burger you get at Krystal or White Castle, except this one is well-seasoned and cooked on the flattop, not steamed. Would be improved with more pickles and the addition of tomato and mayo. 6.5
3 Mouthfeel — Six points for six decent bites. 6
4 Quality/Freshness — Fairly fresh and flavorful. 7
5 Integrity — Very strong and sturdy. 9
6 Atmosphere — I love everything about this joint, from its bizarre giant sign (depicting a puzzled cartoon puppy dog — or panda? — holding a bucket of chicken, feeding a hamburger to a rooster), to the midcentury design of the open air restaurant itself, complete with outdoor picnic table seating, multiple walk-up order windows, and colorful hand-lettered menu. Nostalgic car culture vibes! 7.5
7 Service — Received my order instantly, because several Whammys were already made and wrapped, sitting under a heat lamp, when I arrived. Mixed feelings about this. 6.5
8 Satisfaction — A somewhat satisfying snack. 6.5
9 Creativity/Uniqueness — A good, but fairly typical burger from joints like this. 7.5
10 Value — An amazing value at $4.99! 9
Might go for the bag-full next time! Recommended.
